In 1962 Ugo, Bice, and Maria Letizia DiMare came from Minturno, Italy on the Christopher Columbus. Ugo came to America with his family in search of his American dream of making a better life for his family. Ugo brought not only his family with him but his skills and love of baking.
Ugo began his American baking career at Egidio Pastry Shop on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx soon after arriving to America. Over the next 14 years he not only worked at various pastry shops across the New York area, he also expanded his family in 1965 by welcoming a brand new baby girl named Sabrina.
With his love of baking and wanting more for his family he finally was able to open DiMare Pastry Shop in Riverside, CT on May 8, 1976 with the help of his wife Bice and his two daughters. Ugo always welcomed the help from his two daughters and all though he loved the hard work and excitement of baking he did not want his daughters to work as hard as he was working.
Maria and Sabrina both went to College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, New York. Maria graduated in 1979 with a degree in languages and Secondary Education, and went on to Manhattan College where she graduated with a degree in Counseling Psychology in 1982. Sabrina graduated in 1987 with a degree in Health Education.
In 1982 Maria started her family with a daughter named Gabriella and her family grew with a son Timothy in 1983, and a daughter named Brittany in 1985. Shortly after Maria’s family was complete, Sabrina also started her own family by welcoming a son named Nicholas in 1989, and identical twin boys named Matthew and Michael in 1991.
After welcoming all these great joys Maria and Sabrina came to realize the love they had for their family and the bakery and both of them joined the bakery full time.
Once Maria and Sabrina became totally involved in the bakery and their love of the business started to grow, Ugo, Bice, and the girls decided to expand the business and opened up DiMare Pastry Shop and Café in Stamford, CT on March 3, 1997.
Over the years the business keeps growing and the love of baking continues. Timothy and Brittany have now joined the business full time and have worked with the family in bringing new and creative ideas to the bakery. Ugo, Bice, Maria, Sabrina and the rest of the DiMare family continue to come to work everyday with a deeper love and enjoyment of the bakery business and always love the share the joy with everyone who surrounds them.
